Moms: How Do You Work From Home?
Posted by: | CommentsEven though we are living in an uber-technological age, I’m always surprised by the lack of available telecommuting or work-from-home job opportunities—especially for moms. As I discussed in an earlier post on job sharing, I really think companies are missing out by not hiring moms part-time or in work-from-home positions—the
companies would get great, dedicated employees but wouldn’t have to pay them benefits. Plus, it would give many moms the opportunity to both spend time at home raising their kids and continue their careers. Sadly, most of us have to choose between the two.
But, alas, most companies don’t offer such positions. Still, many moms find creative ways to earn income from home. While blogging does bring in a small amount of money for me, I do it largely because I enjoy blogging (if I calculated the amount I make per hour of work, it would be somewhere in the $2/hour range).
So, I’m looking for other ways to earn income from home (and I know many other moms out there are looking for the same). For those of us who stay-at-home, of course our first priority is to take care of our kids, so we need jobs with flexible, part-time hours. I know a few people who run Etsy stores, which is a great work-from-home opportunity (unless you’re like me and do not have a crafty bone in your body).
What are some other ways you moms out there earn extra cash? Have you tried any work-from-home jobs that didn’t pan out? Do you work a number of small jobs? I’m sure we could always use new ideas and get inspiration from moms who manage to have it all by staying home with their kids and continuing to earn an income.
Job Sharing Options
Posted by: | CommentsAfter talking to many stay-at-home moms who wish there was a way to earn a little income and talking to many working moms who wish they could spend more time at home with their kids, I realized something—doesn’t it seem like society is screaming for more job sharing options? It would be wonderful for moms: two or more people could split one job. Each would work 1-3 days a week, allowing them to earn a small paycheck and still spend most of their time at home with their kids. These arrangements would benefit the employers as well since they wouldn’t have to pay any benefits to job sharers. Despite the seemingly win-win situation, I know of very few job sharing arrangements (ok, none). In fact, the only actual job sharing situation I know of was my mom’s…about 30 years ago.
Does anyone have a good job sharing situation? Or even know of any? Do you know of any companies or industries that may be amenable to such arrangements?
